Luis Miguel Torres

Luis Miguel Torres is a designer with a unique style and a set of strong beliefs about his place in the design world. Luis’s style can vary from photo manipulation to an intense collage of numerous different stocks that are blended to complete harmony. Whatever style Luis uses in his art, you can bet it will always come out pleasant to the eyes. So lets get into another great interview with another talented artist.

Q Welcome to Psdtuts+, please introduce yourself. Could you tell us where you’re from and how you got started in the field?

Hey, my name is Luis Miguel Torres Gamboa. I’m Mexican and I’m 24 years old. I studied architecture but currently I work as a graphic designer.

I guess I started when I was really young. I’ve always liked to draw a lot, since I was a child I used to do compositions mixing lots of colors, I guess that’s what I loved the most, mixing colors, but anyways most of those compositions didn’t have any real sense.

About three years ago, maybe a bit more, I started using Photoshop mostly as a hobby, but when I really got into it was during early 2007, when I got sick. At that time, things were difficult and I couldn’t leave my room for about eight months. Working with Photoshop passed from being a hobby to my escape, it became a way not only to escape my thoughts but even reality. It became somewhat like a therapeutic tool where I would find a relief expressing things with images. When I got better, I started working as a freelance graphic designer. I still do freelance and work on different projects.

Q From a quick look at your portfolio we can instantly see a wide variety of styles, how would you characterize your overall style of design?

I try not to define my work with a certain style. I can say my work is a mixture of ideas. I develop within time and I guess it’s somewhat psychedelic, but still, that is just a tag.

Special K

Q With so many images being used in your illustrations how do you manage to bring harmony to your art?

I try to make it so that every element from my work have a certain meaning and a reason to be. Sometimes, there are many things in these compositions, but still I try to keep a balance so that they wont end up extremely saturated to the point that they wouldn’t be understood. I guess each one of us has their own way to feel and express their harmony.

Sin Azucar

Q How do you know when you are finished when making one of your collages? Some artists will just keep adding more and more images until they have filled up the whole canvas.

I don’t really know how to explain this, but I’ll try. I guess it just “feels” that way. When doing a composition I try to imagine the end before getting to that point so I wont over saturate the composition and I work to maintain a balance.

Nike vs Dali

Q “Magic Mushrooms” is an amazing, vivid, colorful illustration that contains a lot of different images blended together perfectly. Please walk us through how you made it and what your inspirations were to create this piece.

Actually this piece is really interesting the way I got inspired for it. It all started with a trip I did about a year ago with some friends to a Mexican jungle in Oaxaca. The people who live there believe that mushrooms are magical and spiritual. I wanted to represent nature and liberty; seen from another mental state where it doesn’t matter that we are really a consumer culture, the magic is still here in our surroundings.

Q Most of your visuals are not typical and a bit unusual, so where do these idea’s and combinations of images come from?

Most of the time these ideas are born within my dreams and some others are inspired by music and distorted realities. My principal influences are: the music from Shpongle, the ideas of Terrence McKenna and nature. Nature is really important, even watching a tree can be inspiring, by the way it moves with the wind, its movement creates forms, interesting forms.

Q In terms of your design career what do you hope to accomplish in the next five years? And how do you plan on getting this done?

I would like to do many things in five years. But I guess I would like at least to continue improving my design and having interesting and challenging projects where I could learn new things. At the moment I’m starting a new project with InsanseKaffeine and I really hope you guys get to hear about it real soon.

INTRINSIC POETRY

Q Thanks again for providing Psdtuts+ with this opportunity to interview you. Any final thoughts for our readers?

On the contrary thanks to Psdtuts+ for this interview and for giving me the chance to let people know about me, and the reasons why I’m doing this and why I design the way I do.

And as for final thoughts I wouldn’t like to sound like a cliché, but continue developing, express your ideas and your own style, and the most important, enjoy what you do. Thanks.
